The AP Calculus AB and BC exams each have four sections. A graphing calculator is required for Section I Part B (15 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes) and Section II Part A (2 free-response questions, 30 minutes). Calculators are not permitted on Section I Part A (30 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes) or Section II Part B (4 free-response questions, 60 minutes).
AP Calculus AB covers limits, continuity, differentiation, and integration, roughly equivalent to a first-semester college calculus course. Students learn the fundamental theorem of calculus, techniques of differentiation (product rule, quotient rule, chain rule), and basic integration methods including u-substitution and the analysis of area and volume problems.
AP Calculus BC includes all AB topics plus sequences and series (including Taylor and Maclaurin series), parametric, polar, and vector-valued functions, and advanced integration techniques such as integration by parts and partial fractions. BC is equivalent to a full year of college calculus (Calculus I and II).
Both exams use the same format: 45 multiple-choice questions (Section I) and 6 free-response questions (Section II).
